Selena Gomez : Rare (Deluxe), gaining more Hot 100s!
Selena Gomez is an actress and vocalist that is making waves in both art-forms. She started her screen career on the children’s series Barney & Friends before starring in the Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place. As a vocalist, she released her debut solo album Stars Dance in 2013, which hit the top spot on the Billboard 200 and included the single “Come & Get It.” She signed with Interscope in 2014 and released her second studio album Revival in 2015, which also hit the number one spot on the Billboard 200. She began to serve as executive producer for the Netflix series Thirteen Reasons Why in 2017. Gomez is back with Rare (Deluxe). Gomez’s highly anticipated album Rare (Deluxe) represents “a look into my journey of healing and growth,” says Gomez. “It’s by far the work I am most proud of to date.” The seventeen tracks on Rare (Deluxe) gives a broad spectrum of Gomez’s talents as a vocalist. Her new album features three previously-unreleased tracks, “Boyfriend,” “She,” and “Souvenir.”
“Lose You To Love Me,” Gomez co-wrote this catchy track with Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Mattias Larsson, and Robin Fredriksson. The accompanying music video shot by the acclaimed Sophie Muller has received over 215 million views on YouTube. “Lose You To Love Me” is Gomez’s 29th song on the Billboard Hot 100, with 14 of the songs going Top 20. The scaled-down production of piano and voice gives an intimate hearing of the vocalist’s warm vocal quality. It is easy to hear Julia Michaels’ influence in the writing and instrumentation. The result is a pop song that grabs the ear and keeps it.
“Boyfriend” has a hip dance beat and catchy bassline. Gomez’s lyrics are personal, and she sings with heart, which makes the story believable. “It’s a lighthearted song about falling down and getting back up time and time again in love, but also knowing that you don’t need anyone other than yourself to be happy. We wrote it long before our current crisis, but in the context of today, I want to be clear that a boyfriend is nowhere near the top of my list of priorities. Just like the rest of the world, I’m praying for safety, unity, and recovery during this pandemic.” The groove really sells this track, the bridge is hip, and Gomez sounds lovely.
Gomez is personally donating to the Plus1 COVID-19 Relief Fund, as well as $1 from every order of Rare (Deluxe) on her official store to the fund. The singer shows no signs of slowing down on either front, acting, or singing. This is music with a cause that is straight-up fun to listen to and enjoy social distancing with.
