Mary and Brianna : Whiskey and Lust Review

mary-and-brianna-cdHailing from New York is a music duet of twin sisters Mary and Brianna. The have been crafting their pop/country sound to the enjoyment of live audiences in both New York and Nashville. Their beautiful singing has that unique sibling harmony that gives them an original sound that is true to their pop roots and country influences. Lead vocalist and co-writer Mary is passionate about writing melodies and layering high and low harmonies; she also assists in background vocal arrangements. Brianna writes most of the lyrics herself before bringing them to Mary for the vocal arrangement; Mary likes to write the second verses and bridges. Brianna is the storyteller and is very avid about creating honest and relatable lyrics. She’s also the duo’s instrumentalist, playing the guitar, piano, and harmonica. Mary and Brianna have released their five song EP titled, Whiskey and Lust.

With elements of country and pop, “Leave the City” is a romantic song with its inspiration coming from the majesty of the Nashville countryside. The tune conjures images of two lovers leaving the big city to be alone. The modern country sound fits the two sisters perfectly.  The lyrics have a story line that flows over the country inspired pop beat. The acoustic guitar supports that Mary’s voice is warm and clear, but the real magic happens when the twins sing harmonies. Their sound will appeal to a wide audience for sure!

“Clockwork” is a little more pop/rock, but still full of catchy melodies and beautiful lyrics and singing. The call and response of the vocals is a nice touch. Mary’s voice rings clear as Brianna’s support of guitar and harmonies is pure and rich in sound. The bridge has beautiful harmonies. This duet is striking a balance of well-written tunes that bring the best of country lyric writing and feel good melodies, with the additive of beats of pop and rock.

There is something quite special when siblings sing together, and Mary and Brianna have that spark that illuminates their melodies and brings focus to the honest and accessible lyric style.  There is not a track that falls short on Whiskey and Lust.  Each song has its own unique luster and the twins dazzle on each cut.

About The Author
Shannon Smith
A fan of music my entire life. Should that be enough, well it is for me. Who buys music, the fans. Who listens to music, the fans. Like me, there are many like-minded individuals that daily search for meaningful and new music to add to their playlist, their soundtrack of life. A life without music would Bb. Yes, I have seen that saying floating around for years, and truth is, its #truth. So, may I introduce you to Shannon Smith (me). I am the editor. A music junkie that can’t get enough music in my life. A nerd (proudly), with some mad love for technology and design. It is that desire that sparked Sound in Review. Life is busy, the reviews are meant to ultimately introduce and briefly talk about the music. We have a section called SIR Quote: this is my way of saying thank you, to the countless artists making the world a place of expression. Show yours by rating each artists album, just as we have (collectively as writers), to show your support for your favorite artist.
