Moods : Music Ruined My Life Review

moods-cdMoods is back with a project recorded live in Leiden during the peak of the pandemic. Recorded with a full band, Music Ruined My Life has Moods electronic music balanced with soulful contemporary R&B, funk, and jazz.  Music Ruined My Life presents eight tracks of intricate and uncaged spin of the Moods sound, which has been consistently hailed by tastemakers globally and sampled by the likes of Logic. Moods explains, “There really wasn’t a huge concept or target for this record; it was more about tapping into the pure joy of making and creating music,” he explains. “The pandemic was such a weird time; there was a lot of uncertainty in all aspects of life. So it almost felt like the perfect time to try something new. Having the band together in one room was a real rush; I liked how the record came together and how each artist brought their own energy to the project.”

“Let It Slide” is a song with the Dutchman’s notorious fusion of soul, R&B, and alternative influences that takes on a whole new dynamic courtesy of his first fully live recording. The core ensemble is Yasper Molle, guitar; Lennard Vink, keyboards; Joris Feiertag, drums; and Rik Kraak, bass. The live drums and bass add a depth of groove upon which Moods does his electric magic. In addition, Molle and Vink provide textures and colors to further enhance the song. “Let It Slide” is a relaxed groove that will add to any playlist, function, or life event.

The album also offers a funky motion with “Ecstasy.” The arching swells are supported by a slapping and popping bassline, spanky guitar figures, and sultry synths and horn melodies. The deeply atmospheric fusion of soul and funk sets the mood even though there are no vocals, the melodies still ring clear and are easy to follow. “I enjoy working with vocals, and I think the vocalists I have worked with on projects so far have been amazing. But when you take that element out and focus more on the instrumentation and arrangement, it’s a really different experience, and that’s something I really enjoyed for Music Ruined My Life.”

Music Ruined My Life is a beautiful live band recording of Moods’ unique brand of electronic music. Moods garnered more than 30m+ streams globally for his debut LP Zoom Out and has continued to leap from strength-to-strength courtesy of his soulful take on the boundaries between electronic and contemporary R&B. Music Ruined My Life continues his pathway of strength with a flow of funk, jazz, and R&B through the flow of electronica.

About The Author
Shannon Smith
A fan of music my entire life. Should that be enough, well it is for me. Who buys music, the fans. Who listens to music, the fans. Like me, there are many like-minded individuals that daily search for meaningful and new music to add to their playlist, their soundtrack of life. A life without music would Bb. Yes, I have seen that saying floating around for years, and truth is, its #truth. So, may I introduce you to Shannon Smith (me). I am the editor. A music junkie that can’t get enough music in my life. A nerd (proudly), with some mad love for technology and design. It is that desire that sparked Sound in Review. Life is busy, the reviews are meant to ultimately introduce and briefly talk about the music. We have a section called SIR Quote: this is my way of saying thank you, to the countless artists making the world a place of expression. Show yours by rating each artists album, just as we have (collectively as writers), to show your support for your favorite artist.
