Sierra Ferrell | Long Time Coming Review

Sierra-Ferrel-cdSierra Ferrell is releasing her mesmerizing debut album on Rounder Records called Long Time Coming. Ferrell sings a dozen songs beautifully uncontrolled by category or period, and the project was co-produced by 10-time Grammy Award-winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Sarah Jarosz) and Australian musician Stu Hibberd and recorded at Nashville’s Southern Ground and Minutia studios. Ferrell was joined by an extraordinary collection of guest musicians, including Billy Strings, Sarah Jarosz, Dennis Crouch, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Chris Scruggs, and Rory Hoffman.

“Jeremiah” has a strong foundation in bluegrass, not only because of its instrumentation and feel but because of the melody. However, Ferrell’s agile singing incorporates elements of Alison Krauss, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton. That is an impressive list, but there are elements of each that ring in Ferrell’s melodious voice, which makes her music have such appeal. Bringing elements of the past and combining them with today’s themes and players is a winning combination. Not to mention Ferrell’s wonderful personality that shines through on this tune.

“At The End of the Rainbow” gives another side of Ferrell’s many talents as she sings to a ragtime-era feel with New Orleans improvised trombone and clarinet. At times there are elements of Gypsy jazz and even a Delta blues spirit. However, the consistent factor is Ferrell’s ear-catching singing. She will spin phrases that remind you of the past but then do something completely unique and truly hers, and that’s where the beauty lies. Her command of so much music in such a tiny young frame is astonishing.

Long Time Coming is an album that captures an artist that was born to sing. Ferrell excels at mixing genres and iconic country singing styles that are forged through heartfelt lyrics. Ferrell is bringing such an authentic and unique sound to country roots music that she simply cannot be ignored. Spend some time absorbing in her singing, and you will be lured by her charms in a matter of a few bars.

About The Author
Shannon Smith
A fan of music my entire life. Should that be enough, well it is for me. Who buys music, the fans. Who listens to music, the fans. Like me, there are many like-minded individuals that daily search for meaningful and new music to add to their playlist, their soundtrack of life. A life without music would Bb. Yes, I have seen that saying floating around for years, and truth is, its #truth. So, may I introduce you to Shannon Smith (me). I am the editor. A music junkie that can’t get enough music in my life. A nerd (proudly), with some mad love for technology and design. It is that desire that sparked Sound in Review. Life is busy, the reviews are meant to ultimately introduce and briefly talk about the music. We have a section called SIR Quote: this is my way of saying thank you, to the countless artists making the world a place of expression. Show yours by rating each artists album, just as we have (collectively as writers), to show your support for your favorite artist.
