KT Tunstall WAX Review

kt-tunstall-cd-cover

Guitarist and vocalist KT Tunstall is back with her sixth full-length release called WAX.  The Scottish singer-songwriter, now based in Los Angeles, called on producer by Nick McCarthy for this release. The album also completes the spirit, body and mind trilogy that began in 2016 for Tunstall. WAX is the “body.” KT is impassioned through all eleven tracks, there is a nice mix of large production singalble choruses paired with intricate melodies. Her lyrics are written with care and conveyed with her husky pop/rock vocal style. The songs have a nice flow with enough edge to make you sit up and pay attention.

The music features elements of rock, with guitar parts that are distorted and beats that offer a pounding edge. KT’s vocals are spiked with buoyancy that convey a raspier attitude than the average pop singer. There are brass hits, synth parts that float in and out over feels, but always rooted in rock, with a slight lean toward other genres for a nice variety. KT is always evolving and experimenting and that is what makes her an artist that is fun to listen to and discover anew with each release.

KT has the ability to cross generations of listeners and with the release of WAX this might very well bind together generations of listeners. The music traverses a few genre based sectors, but all seamlessly tied together by Tunstall’s signature voice. If you approach the listen by not comparing to her other albums, you will see the beauty in the masterpiece she has created with WAX. Not only does each listen stick with you longer, it seems to happily linger.

About The Author
Shannon Smith
A fan of music my entire life. Should that be enough, well it is for me. Who buys music, the fans. Who listens to music, the fans. Like me, there are many like-minded individuals that daily search for meaningful and new music to add to their playlist, their soundtrack of life. A life without music would Bb. Yes, I have seen that saying floating around for years, and truth is, its #truth. So, may I introduce you to Shannon Smith (me). I am the editor. A music junkie that can’t get enough music in my life. A nerd (proudly), with some mad love for technology and design. It is that desire that sparked Sound in Review. Life is busy, the reviews are meant to ultimately introduce and briefly talk about the music. We have a section called SIR Quote: this is my way of saying thank you, to the countless artists making the world a place of expression. Show yours by rating each artists album, just as we have (collectively as writers), to show your support for your favorite artist.
