Jordan Davis : Buy Dirt Review

jordan-davisJordan Davis is back with his new EP titled Buy Dirt. The Multi-Platinum-selling singer/songwriter has teamed up with producer Paul DiGiovanni to create the eight-song follow-up to last year’s self-titled EP and his debut album Home State. Davis is a husband and new father, and his songwriting reflects the place he is in at this point in life. He co-wrote every song on the EP except for the John Prine inspired “Blow Up Your TV,” as Prine has significantly influenced Davis’ music. Buy Dirt has moments where Davis proceeds as a country innovator, expanding and modernizing his sound, but still holds true to his roots and love for the classic country sound. “I’ve always loved artists who take risks,” says Davis. “I’m in a different spot in my life than I was when I released Home State. We all are! 2020 was a tough time for everyone. I used that time to recenter some things in my world, and I didn’t want those lessons to go to waste. I wanted to create something special. The best way to that was to write honestly, and we did a lot of that on this record”.

The title track, “Buy Dirt,” has well-written lyrics and a catchy melody. Guest vocalist Luke Bryan joins Davis on the track – “We sat around the fire after a golf tournament one day, smoking cigars and talking about everything but music,” Davis recalls. “That conversation always stuck with me. Luke isn’t just a great entertainer; he’s a great Dad, a great husband, and a great friend, too. That’s what ‘Buy Dirt’ embodies. When I wrote ‘Buy Dirt,’ I knew he could relate to the song’s message. I took a chance and asked him to join me on the recording, and he said yes.” The song has a deep meaning, and the two-vocalist blend well together.

“I Still Smoked” has a classic modern country sound that Davis excels at with a familiar yet fresh melody. The chorus expands with backing vocals, guitars, and big drums. Davis’ vocals are warm, masculine, and distinctly country.

Buy Dirt is Davis presenting his smooth flowing country sounds percolating with a perfect blend of modern and traditional country. The backing instruments and vocals add a gentle musical feel, featuring gorgeous vocal harmonies. Davis again creates a set of well-written material that will delight country fans.
