Metallica : 72 Seasons Review
Metallica is back with their twelfth studio album called 72 Seasons. The album consumes 77 minutes with 12 tracks and is produced by Greg Fidelman in collaboration with guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. The title “72 Seasons” refers to this critical period of the first 18 years of our lives in which parental influence can either confine or liberate us as individuals, as described by Hetfield (the primary lyricist for the band). The lyrics on the album delve into the analysis of how these foundational beliefs impact our adult perceptions and experiences.
Opening the album is the title track with all the power we have grown to love about Metallica. Just within the first song, we get a plethora of riffs, an essential element woven into the fabric of every memorable heavy metal song. In this song, Metallica presents a profusion of such riffs, meticulously crafted to construct a cohesive song, a testament to their growth as a band and their understanding of the power of an epic riff. Again, Fidelman’s production shines, capturing the band’s chemistry with remarkable clarity. Hammett’s love of the wah-wah delivers another expressive solo, with a second solo showing his growth as a soloist. With a powerful opening of dynamics, a solid vocal performance, well-written lyrics, and the band project a sense of enjoyment in their performance.
“Lux Æterna” is a new sound for Metallica, still based on their signature powerful rhythm riffs, this driving heavy metal selection has a slight hue of 80s hard rock. Hammett’s lead solos demonstrate agility, creativity, and the use of the whammy bar again pulls from the hair bands of the 80s. Bassist Rob Trujillo and drummer Lars Ulrich build an incredibly energetic feel. Frontman Hetfield’s vocals are always masculine and powerful, and he fronts the band with energy and charisma, which is the key to any great heavy metal band.
72 Seasons is an outstanding, lyrically profound, and musically sophisticated collection of songs, presenting Metallica at their most comfortable and focused on their strengths. It is a remarkable feat, given their history of creative tension. The album’s unwavering sound and chemistry of the band ultimately triumph over any perceived negatives, reflecting Metallica’s ability to deliver a cohesive and engaging listening experience.
Metallica’s seasoned musicians have evolved through their experiences, resulting in a richer and more nuanced sound. The album’s introspective lyrics and sophisticated music demonstrate the band’s growth, showcasing their ability to tap into the wellspring of wisdom that comes with age. As a result, 72 Seasons offers listeners an opportunity to explore the depths of human experience and emotion, resonating with the shared understanding that only time and life’s trials can genuinely provide.
